Helga Gish Helga Gish, age 84, of Henderson, KY, passed away at 11:29 AM, Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at her home under the care of St. Anthony’s Hospice. Helga was born in Berlin, Germany in 1929 to Erwin Roof and Erna Amelia Thiemann. Later she met Robert Gish, Jr., while he was stationed in Berlin, with the US Army during WWII. They were married July 30, 1947. Robert enlisted another year in order to bring his “war-bride” home to the United States. She traveled alone by ship to join his family in Nebo, KY. Helga lived with Robert’s parents on the family farm while he concluded his military service. They moved to Henderson where Helga worked for CBS Dress Factory and The Hosiery Mill. After two unsuccessful pregnancies, Helga and Robert welcomed four healthy children. She was a homemaker and enjoyed being a mother. While raising her children she also provided in home childcare, where she influenced the lives of many children. Helga was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. For the last several years she was affiliated with Zion Baptist Church. Helga loved music, loved to dance, work cross word puzzles, and enjoyed traveling to Florida & Germany. She loved to share her life stories about Germany and coming to America. Helga was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 50 years Robert Gish, Jr., and a grandson Wesley Alan Powell. Survivors include: 2 Sons: Danny Gish and wife Clydean Rick Gish and wife Ann 2 Daughters: Debbie Ligon Karin Powell and husband Alan all of Henderson, KY 1 Sister: Edeltraud Peike of Krefeld, Germany 10 Grandchildren 14 Great Grandchildren Relatives and friends are invited to Helga’s Life Celebration from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, October 4, 2013 and again on Saturday starting at 9:00 AM until service at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home, Henderson, KY. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the funeral home with the Reverend Mark Galloway officiating. Burial will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery in Poole, KY.
