Wesley Dennis “W.D.” Owens, Jr., age 90, of Henderson, KY, passed away at 1:57pm, Friday, October 27, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family and under the care of St. Anthony’s Hospice. W.D. was a devoted husband and loving father. He was “Master Electrician” who started Owens’ Electric and Henderson Electric. He was co-founder of West Kentucky Plastics. In his retirement was Henderson’s “Lamp Doctor”. He was a charter member of Chapel Hill Methodist church, Mason, Rotarian, proud longtime chairman of the Henderson Democratic Party (chairing several campaigns), ran for City Commissioner, first chairman of Human Rights Commission, helped bring Habitat for Humanity to Henderson, Zoning Commission chairman, and Hugh Edward Sandefer board member. He and his wife, Joyce, traveled abroad through as members in Friendship Force. He was a premier softball pitcher for Chrysler Corp. and voted into the Henderson County Hall of Fame. After pitching he became a men’s and girl’s softball coach. W.D. coached Chapel Hill’s successful men’s basketball team. He loved music and sang in the Chapel Hill choir for 30 years. During WWII he worked on the production of LST’s in Evansville and paving Geneva road before leaving for World War II (WWII). He served in the Army during WWII and played a part in the historic Tojo war crimes trial in Japan during1945. W.D. enjoyed his community, politics, reading history, UK sports, and bringing humor to the conversation. He was born in Island, Ky., where his family survived the nation’s Great Depression, before moving to Henderson. Wesley was preceded in death by Father Wesley Dennis Owens Senior, Mother Mary Carter Owens, Brother James Owens, Sister Francis Biggs and Grandson Ryan Morgan Owens Survivors include: Wife of 73 years: Joyce Owens, 1 Daughter: Marsha Mullins and husband Morris, 2 Sons: Dennis Owens and wife Becky, Randy Owens and wife Marla, 1 Sister: Margaret Keach, Seven Grandchildren: Wesley Owens, Whitney Smith, Paul Owens, Ryan Owens (deceased), Patrick Adamson, Denise Newman, and Cassie Owens, Ten Great Grandchildren: Nadia Adamson, Jacob Newman, Ethan Owens, Morgan Smith, Laney Owens, London Owens, Owen Smith, Ava Newman, Emma Owens and Knox Adamson, Nieces and Nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to W.D.’s Life Celebration from 3:00-8:00pm, Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home and again on Wednesday starting at 10:00am at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be Wednesday, November 1, at 12:00pm at the church with Reverend Ted Burke officiating assisted by Reverend Mike Snyder. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson, KY. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Chapel Hill United Methodist Church or St. Anthony’s Hospice.
