Sylvester Joseph Johnson Jr.

Sylvester Joseph Johnson, Jr., age 74, of Henderson, KY, passed away at 8:46PM, Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at his home under the care of St. Anthony’s Hospice and surrounded by his family. Sylvester graduated from Blessed Martin Catholic School in Waverly, KY. Shortly after, he met the love of his life, Cozette, or “Cozy” as he would call her, and they married in 1971. Sylvester was a very hard working man. He was proud of his work in the construction field with Industrial Contractors Union. He had to change careers after a back injury, but found satisfaction serving in the Union County School System doing custodial work at the high school for many years. Faith was an important part of Sylvester’s life. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Waverly, KY, and in more recent years, attended Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Henderson. His favorite pastime was playing basketball. Sylvester was loved by many and was a man who touched the lives of those lucky to know him. Above all, Sylvester was cherished by his family and the joy he brought to their lives cannot be measured. Sylvester was preceded in death by his father and step-mother, Sylvester and Della Mae Johnson, his mother and step-father, Martha and Clarence Houston, sister, Sarah Elizabeth Houston Harrigan, Brothers: James Houston, Ray Johnson, and Larry Houston. Survivors include: Loving wife of 47 years, Cozette Jackson Johnson of Henderson, KY 3 Daughters: Felicia Tinsley and her husband Jackie of Morganfield, KY, Karen Davis of Charlotte, NC, and Esther Johnson of Henderson, KY 2 Brothers: Thomas Johnson and his wife Annie of Fort Wayne, IN, and Larry Johnson and his wife Yuko of Lexington, KY 4 Sisters: Rebecca Ross and her husband Carl of Evansville, IN, Martha Ann McGuire and her husband Greg of Waverly, KY, Gloria Bowers Sanders of Henderson, KY, and Marsha Williams of Henderson, KY 8 Grandchildren: Sequenze Fletcher, Brittany Wilson, Sianca Fletcher, Salyric Fletcher, Cyril Wilson, Jr., Darrylin Garner, Nekasia Wilson, and Joshua Tinsley 2 Great Grandchildren: Aniyah Acchiardo and Nicholas Hinton, Jr. A host of loving Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and friends Relatives and friends are invited to Sylvester’s Life Celebration from 9:00-11:30AM Wednesday, February 7, at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00PM, Wednesday, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Larry McBride officiating. Burial will follow in Fernwood Cemetery in Henderson, KY.
