Richard Willis Cox

Richard Willis Cox, age 84, of Henderson, KY, passed away at 8:25 PM, Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at his home under the care of St. Anthony’s Hospice. Richard and Mickey were high school sweethearts who dated for 3 years while in school. After graduating, he enlisted into the Army and served in Korea. Richard drove a cab for his father’s cab company and ultimately took over ownership. Richard worked for the United States Post Office for 31 years, where he retired as a Postmaster. His favorite part of being a postman was personally responding to children’s letters to Santa Claus every year. Richard loved the St. Louis Cardinals and UK Basketball and he was an avid Peyton Manning fan. He was a jokester and a lousy card player. Richard enjoyed his weekly dates with his mother-in-law and a gaggle of her girlfriends for bingo at Redbanks Nursing Home. Life was fun. Richard was kind, generous, honest, and a man of integrity. He enjoyed many meaningful memberships: American Legion Worsham Post #40, VFW-1114 of Evansville, Masonic Jerusalem Lodge #9, Henderson Rotary, and Postmaster Organization. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Sarah Browder Cox, sister-in-law Frances Womack, and brothers-in-law Lee Roy Grossman and Charles Grossman. Survivors include: Wife of 63 years: Gladys “Mickey” Cox of Henderson, KY Son: Richard W. Cox, Jr. of Henderson, KY Brother: Guy Cox, Jr and wife Andrea of Morganton, GA Sister: Marie Lowe of Largo, FL Sisters-in-law: Margaret Hall and husband Randy of Louisville, KY Shirley Lichtenberger and husband Gary of Evansville, IN Dorothy DeVault and husband Dick of Evansville, IN Barbara Melton and husband James Ray of Henderson, KY Brothers-in-law: Carl Grossman and wife Reba of Spottsville, KY Gary Grossman and wife Gale of Henderson, KY Ben Grossman and wife Dolly of Henderson, KY Jack Womack of Newburgh, IN Many Nieces and Nephews Relatives and friends are invited to Richard’s Life Celebration from 12:00 to 7:00 PM Saturday and again on Sunday starting at 10:00 AM until service time at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home, Henderson, KY. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the funeral home with the Reverend Tim Hobbs officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Garden in Henderson, KY. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Worsham Post #40. Masonic Service will be led by the Masonic Jerusalem Lodge #9 at 6:00 PM on Saturday at the funeral home.
