James Summers

James E. (Jack) Summers James E. (Jack) Summers, 86, passed away on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 7:30 AM after a long illness. He was surrounded by his family at home. He was born on August 25, 1924 in Henderson County to Martin C. and Chloe Coomes Summers. Jack was an active life long member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. He served 18 months overseas as a Corporal in the US Army Air Corps, 15th Air Force, 465th Bomb Group, Headquarters Squadron. He was stationed at Pantanella Air Field, Italy during WWII. His awards and decorations included the American Campaign Medal, European African-Middle Eastern Campaign with seven Battle Stars, National Defense Service Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. His unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster. After returning from serving overseas, he returned to his job at the US Postal Service in Henderson, KY until his retirement in 1984. He was president of the Henderson National Letter Carriers Association. Upon retirement Jack enjoyed playing golf and pool with his friends, being a member of the Gathering Place, writing his autobiography, tinkering around in his garage, volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He also was a courier for the First National and Citizens Banks. He was a charter member of the Holy Name Men's Club, member of the Knights of Columbus and Henderson American Legion Post. He was also a former member of the Henderson Municipal Golf Course. He was preceded in death by his mother, Chole Coomes Summers, his father, Martin C. Summers, his first wife of 15 years, Ethel Powell Summers, His brother, Thomas H. (Kitty) Summers. Survivors include: Wife of 45 years: Bettye DeKemper Summers Henderson, KY 2 Sons: Donald Summers Henderson, KY Brad Summers and wife Crista Madisonville, KY 4 Daughters: Judy Regel and husband Bob Evansville, IN Kathleen Burton and husband Jerry Henderson, KY Emily Davis Summers Henderson, KY Jayma McCarter and husband James Newburgh, IN 2 Devoted Sisters: Frances Delores Summers Henderson, KY Dorothy Ann Summers Henderson, KY 11 Grandchildren: Amy Martin, Christy Wunderlich, Jill Martin, Benjamin Davis, Kelli Burton, Brother Pio MFVA (Burton), Matthew Burton, Dean Summers, Will Summers, Jackson Summers, and Carson McCarter 4 Great Grandsons: Blake, Drew, Owen and Ryan Nieces and Nephews A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father J. Edward Bradley at 12:00 PM, Monday, December 20, 2010 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Henderson, KY. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery, Henderson, KY. Friends may call from 1:00- 3:30 PM and 5:00-8:00 PM on Sunday and from 9:00-11:00 AM on Monday at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home, Henderson, KY. Prayer Service will be held 5:00 PM, December 19, 2010 at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home, Henderson, KY. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to: St. Anthony's Hospice, St. Vincent DePaul, or the Holy Name Building Fund.
