Bettye J. "Maw" Wright

Bettye J. “Maw” Wright, age 88, of Henderson, KY, passed away at 10:15 AM, Monday, July 14, 2014, at her home. Bettye was born into a large family with six siblings. Her father worked for the railroad, and was killed at a young age in an accident. Her mother raised the family and ran the family farm alone. During this tough time her only brother, John, lied about his age to join the Navy, to be able to send money home to his family to help support them. Bettye went to school in Webster County. She left school and got married at the young age of 15 to Willie Caton. Together they had two children. Bettye worked at the Hosiery Mill. She later married Harold Wright. Together they owned and ran the Wright’s Tastee Freeze for over twenty years. During her retirement she spent much of her time helping raise her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Family was most important, and always came first to her. Bettye was a longtime member of Finley Baptist Church. She enjoyed raising a garden every year, and had plenty of cookbooks. Bettye was a wonderful cook; everyone was welcome at her table. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold K. Wright, daughter Judy Graham, grandson Greg Nelson, parents Ben and Mary Odom, sisters Edith Chamberlain and Emma Lou Sirls, and brother John Lewis Odom. Survivors include: Daughter: Jonita Stone and husband James of Henderson, KY 3 Sisters: Joyce Wells, Evadine May, and Reva May 4 Grandchildren: Eddie Nelson, Kevin Stone and wife Cathy, David Stone and wife Dawn, and Doris Nelson 9 Great Grandchildren: Sarah, Bailey, Sarah, Charles, Tyler, Michael, Kristen, Emma, and Macey 3 Great Great-Grandchildren: Daniel, Elizabeth, and Ryder Relatives and friends are invited to Bettye’s Life Celebration from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday and again on Thursday starting at 9:00 AM until service time at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home, Henderson, KY. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the funeral home with the Reverend Charles Crowder officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmont Cemetery in Henderson, KY. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to: Ronald McDonald House in Evansville, IN.
