Leo Lester Winchester

Leo Lester Winchester Leo went to be in the presence of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on November 5, 2013. He was born on May 24, 1935 in Brevard, NC to Leo and Ida Winchester. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Winchester on July 1, 2013. Leo was preceded in death by brothers D.S. Winchester, Ray M Winchester , Charles Lee Winchester and sister Mary Amalia Winchester; brothers in law Boyd Oliver, James Wilson and sister in law Sara Elizabeth Brewer Winchester. Mr Winchester is survived by brothers Glenn Freeman Winchester and Boice Lynch Winchester; sisters, Ruby Winchester Oliver and Shirley Winchester Wilson, sisters in law: Julia Jordan Winchester, Carolyn Lemmond Winchester, Myra Pettit Winchester, Denise Cuddy Winchester and Sandra Avery Winchester. Leo is also survived by his special care givers, Scarlet and Eddie Garrett. Leo was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and a Children’s Sunday School teacher. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a 32nd degree Mason. He graduated from Berea College in 1957 and received a Masters Degree in Education from Western Kentucky University. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Leo began working as a 5th grade teacher in Henderson. He quickly moved into various principal positions and eventually served as the Assistant Superintendent and the Chief Financial Officer of the Henderson County Board of Education. Leo was one of the founders of Riverview School. Through their years of dedicated service in their community and in their church, Mary and Leo touched the lives of thousands of children and families--all to the glory of God. Even in their years of retirement, they continued to be recognized for their work ethic, kindness, love and grace. The Winchester legacy will live on for many, many years in Henderson, Kentucky. Relatives and friends are invited to Leo’s Life Celebration from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013 at Tapp Funeral Home and again on Saturday, November 9th at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 307 Center Street, Henderson, KY where funeral services will be held at 12 noon with Reverend Todd Linn PhD officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson, KY. Memorials may be given to Riverview School of Henderson, 133 S. Water St., Henderson, KY 42420 or First Baptist Church.
