George Owen Cummings, Sr

George Owen Cummings, Sr., age 83, of Madisonville, KY, passed away at 6:40 AM, Monday, January 25, 2016, at Baptist Health in Madisonville, KY. George Owen Cummings, Sr. was a larger than life individual, who took great pride in his family. One of 12 brothers and sisters, he left home at the age of 9 to provide for his loved ones, working on a local farm. George loved to box and was a champion in the “Golden Gloves”; a local fight club in the late 1940’s. He served our country in the Korean Conflict with the United States Army. In his time in the service he was a tank commander and eventually became a sergeant. After his service, George worked in the oil fields as a Chief Oil Driller within the United States and internationally as well. He was a member of the Madisonville American Legion and the VFW in Madisonville. George was a joker and a card shark, taking pride in his long standing winning streak. He meant the world to his family. In addition to his parents, Samuel and Lovel Cummings, George was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn Cummings, 5 sisters, Tennie Fonseca, Mary Frances Cummings, Lola Mae Veirman, Elizabeth Lee Scott, Edith Duncan, 3 brothers, Levi Cummings, Samuel Cummings and Charles Cummings. Survivors include: Daughter: Terri Pride Madisonville, KY Son: George Cummings, II and his wife Karen Madisonville, KY Step- Son: Michael Gee and his wife Kellie Providence, KY Brother: Wayne Alves and his wife Pam Zion, KY 2 Sisters: Rose Hall Henderson, KY Bonnie Freeman Paducah, KY Companion: Helen Doss Madisonville, KY 7 Grandchildren 6 Great Grandchildren Nieces and Nephews Relatives and friends are invited to George’s Life Celebration from 5:00- 8:00 PM Friday and again on Saturday starting at 9:00 AM at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the funeral home with Pastor Terry Slaton officitaing. Burial will follow at Clay Cemetery in Geneva, KY. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Worsham Post #40.
